Hi Mom and Dad and Random Internet Person

Hello world! I know it's just been ages and ages since I posted anything here, and I know you must have really missed me. Yeah.

Because I am lazy, I'll just make a list here of new and exciting things that I could tell you about if I wasn't lazy:

  • Graduation. I didn't trip.
  • Colorado Trail with Hummingbird and Ray-nbow
  • ASPB Plant Biology 2009 and my future endeavors
  • Tilly
  • what else? hmm? post-graduation letdown, rousting the mouses out of my houses (or rather, my old bedroom)
Well, not to leave you in suspense, but that is about all the patience I have at the moment. My bad. :) Keep your stick on the ice!

Freakin' and streakin'

There's a sort of cold, heavy-yet-spry panic that sets in whenever I remember that I have exactly just two weeks left on the Hill. OH HELL.

Also, Sunday nights are the worst.

Oh, also, happy Mother's Day, world. My mom is the best, and I don't think I tell her that enough. So oddly, I'm telling you, Internet. Great.

Oh, and ps...I finally went streaking this weekend. Here's to a long life of nude running...

Dreamin'

Nagyon nagyon jo'!

So that was a great race to watch - Mine That Bird, the 50-1 LOOOONGSHOT for the 135th Kentucky Derby win. Way to go, horse and rider. Please notice the size of Mine That Bird in comparison with all the other barrel-chested steeds. Yep.

Also interesting from this looong (and somehow not long enough...hmm) weekend:
  • Discussions on transhumanism, relational theology, and personhood with regard to robots (ahem, Battlestar Galactica connections here people!)
  • Poster session - a VERY mini practice for this summer
  • Viewing serene Saturn and our mysterious moon "up close and personal(ly)"...
  • Lutefest. What a chore. ;)
  • writing papers...uck.
Three weeks to graduation folks! Weird. Thank GOD.

Read more here. It's a great story.

I beg your pardon...

...I never promised you a rose garden! (these are lyrics from a Lynn Anderson song)

The sunrise is beautiful, and it's always a gift to see it. :)
So I've been up a good (or bad?) portion of the night. Long enough to be dyslexic with my typing, apparently. Anyway. I'm writing this paper. So that's good. That I'm actually writing it. Success in baby steps friends!

Along with the sunshine, there's gotta be a little rain sometime...

Practice makes better

But it is so damn hard sometimes.

I've been feeling lonely. It's the sort of vague, unnamed feeling that seems to undergird my every day here on this lovely Hill. Sometimes I hate it, sometimes I rise above it, and most times I am tired enough to not do much about it.

But I decided last week to be more active in practicing positivity. Right. And since it is Easter, a specific sort of 'positivity' comes to mind, which I'll use these excerpts from Wendell Berry's The Mad Farmer Liberation Front to express:

So, friends, every day do something that won't compute.
Love the Lord. Love the world.
Work for nothing. Take all that you have and be poor.
Love someone who does not deserve it.

Expect the end of the world. Laugh.
Laughter is immeasurable. Be joyful
though you have considered all the facts.

Go with your love to the fields.
Lie down in the shade. Rest your head
in her lap. Swear allegiance
to what is nighest your thoughts.

Be like the fox
who makes more tracks than necessary,
some in the wrong direction.
Practice resurrection.

Practice resurrection.

Anne Lamott says frequently in her book Grace Eventually that very often the bravest and best thing we can do is get out of bed each morning.

Practice resurrection.

So here's one thing that I'll miss about St. Olaf, about Northfield, about this chapter in my life as I move into the next one: I'll miss Holy Cross Dundas. I'll miss this tiny congregation that it's taken me four years to get to know and feel a part of...these people who have been so supportive and such a down-to-earth, flawed-in-all-the-human-ways community. I have rarely been at my best here. But I have always been welcomed and loved, even when I didn't let myself notice. It's like Jacob and his dream of a ladder..."Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it!"
